Bonnie’s Floral Boutique is the oldest full-service florist in downtown Henderson, opening on Water Street in 1986 by 23-year-old Bonnie Parcel (now Roberts) with help from her mother Jayne Parcel. “We provide personalized service and put our heart in every order,” Bonnie said. “Every customer is as important as the next, no matter the size or cost of an order.” It’s that philosophy that has kept her family-owned and operated shop blooming.
Given Bonnie’s history in the community – and relationships developed through her now grown-up son and daughter who went to neighborhood schools – she’s serving the next generation of clientele as well as original customers. “It’s great having the continuity of service and relationships with all family members and their extended networks, plus bringing new customers into the cycle,” she said. “I still love seeing the happy and surprised expressions on people’s faces when they receive flowers.” She often does deliveries with her husband Mike on Saturdays.
Bonnie makes every type of arrangement, including fresh flower and balloon bouquets; green plants; dish gardens; cactus gardens in mirrored glass; prom flowers; unique gift, fruit and gourmet baskets; and flowers for all occasions such as weddings and funerals. She uses high quality, full-size items – not samples – including Ganz stuffed animals in baskets. She provides same-day and hospital delivery service throughout the valley and can wire flowers anywhere through FTD and Teleflora.
Bonnie’s Floral Boutique always has been in Water Street District. Originally renting space on Water Street, she moved to her current location at 117 W. Atlantic Ave. in 1996 after buying the property. Mike, a landscape designer, helped her design the interior and exterior, the latter recognized for its desert garden and bridge.
“I enjoy being in downtown Henderson because of the people and small town atmosphere. It still feels that way, even after all these years,” said Bonnie, who moved to Henderson from Green Bay, Wisconsin, when she was in high school. She remains a big cheerleader for the town she calls home.
It was a chance occurrence that led Bonnie to pursue a floral career. Following graduation from Basic High School, she moved to Texas for college and worked at a German restaurant after a bartending stint. She recalls looking at the buffet table containing various hot item trays and thinking the display didn’t look very appetizing. “I went outside and gathered some greenery to camouflage the burners,” she said. “That made all the difference, and the table looked great. That’s when the spark hit me to become a florist.” Bonnie returned to Henderson, received an education grant, and graduated from the Ikenobo Floral Arts School. She worked in a flower shop for two years before buying her own place.
Bonnie’s Floral Boutique is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For information or orders, call 702-565-7888.
