A full-time portrait studio, Mikel’s Fine Art Photography is home to professional photographer, Mikel Conrad, whose passion for photography, family, and community led him to the Water Street District. Mikel, who has been in the business for more than 15 years, opened his shop on Water Street in February 2010.

“I love the area,” said Mikel. “Not only did I grow up in Henderson and hang out on Water Street, but I’ve always found the area to be both vibrant and active in a distinguishingly exquisite way. In fact, to portray a retro look in some of my photos, I often use Water Street as a backdrop for high school seniors.”
In studio, Mikel uses a virtual background system called the “scene machine” to produce more than 1,500 different background options. Each slide gives a different feel to the photograph, ranging from graphic designs to beaches and outdoor settings to school mascots. There are several traditional backgrounds and a large variety for portraits.
Mikel’s Fine Art Photography specializes in portraits of individuals from high-school seniors to executives, children and families, in-studio or on-location. The shop can take care of framing and is one of the few studios in town that provides complete photo restoration. Additionally, Mikel has been known to give a Norman Rockwell-quality, or an oil painted look, to some prints in which the photo looks like a painted portrait.
“The true portrait photographer controls lighting and poses to create a unique image, adds artwork to give photos a sense of culture, and creates a no-pressure environment so the customer is relaxed and having fun, and then you get the perfect shot,” said Mikel.
As an outdoorsman and Boy Scout leader for the last 25 years, Mikel is invested in the community. He takes pride in shooting for Boy Scout, Silver Beaver Award, and American Cancer Society events; he recently completed the first “Warriors Against Breast Cancer Society” calendar to promote Breast Cancer awareness; and he gives discounts to military families and Eagle Scouts. Mikel also supports the local food pantries by having his clients bring in non-perishable foods for their family portrait session during the month of November, over the years collecting several hundred pounds of food.
Mikel has been married to the girl next door for 26 years and has four children, two of which are Eagle Scouts with Mikel and one who is nearly an Eagle Scout. He sits on the Arts and Social Committee for the Water Street District Business Association, and is a member of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, WPPI and PPA.
