“We’ll do what it takes to get the job done and get it done correctly.” That’s the philosophy that Buzz Betley has followed for 25 years and the reason why his Henderson A-1 Printing is so highly regarded from both long-time and new customers – and a reason why he’s never had to advertise.
Henderson A-1 Printing is a bit of a misnomer for the business that prides itself on being able to print on anything that is printable. Along with partners, Still SEWBUSY and PLAYERS Fabulous Trophies, Awards & Embroidery, the team has built a healthy business specializing in screen printing, embroidery, silk screening, alterations, dressmaking, and engraving on all types of products.
Though the shop is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, the team will make appointments around customers’ schedules and take on any sized job, no matter how big or small. Buzz said his largest job was 12,000 t-shirts for the Aid for Aids of Nevada (AFAN) Walk. He’s had a number of single item jobs for special gifts that similar businesses don’t do because the orders are so small. “One of the strangest jobs was from an Oakland Raiders fan who brought in thong underwear to embroider with the team name,” he recalls.
According to Buzz, walk-in customers are always welcome for any type of printing, embroidery or engraving job. “If we can’t do it, we will refer them to other businesses and invite people to shop around if they think they can get a better price.”
Henderson A-1 Printing as been at 101 W. Atlantic Avenue for 10 years. Prior, Buzz worked out of his house as did Sandy Jones of Still SEWBUSY. As both of their businesses grew, they needed more space, particularly given the size of the screen printing and embroidery equipment. They decided to partner and moved into the current building which is almost 5,000 square feet. Mike and Sandie Krabbe of PLAYERS Fabulous Trophies, Awards & Embroidery joined them two years ago.
A Water Street District resident, Buzz likes the Atlantic Avenue location. “I really enjoy people coming to the office. And if it’s around 4 p.m., it’s perfect timing to sit down and chat over a cold beer,” he said. “I like being close to everything and being able to walk to Kelly’s Barber Shop to get my hair cut, the police station to drop off the embroidered shirts we do for the crossing guards or to Downtown Sewing Machine Co. for supplies. It’s also convenient to walk to the weekly Farmers’ Market or Coo Coo’s Gourmet Coffee Café for lunch.”
Job opportunities as a meat-cutter and later a manager brought Buzz to Henderson from Utah 45 years ago with his wife and young family. He started a side business, Caps by Buzz, 25 years ago. After getting a large order and realizing the growth potential, he formed Henderson A-1 Printing which he’s continued full-time, even after retiring from the meat-cutting business 12 years ago. “I’ve got a good retirement, but this business is steady and I really enjoy it and the people I come in contact with.”
