There aren’t many classic bars that have an old-time feel with a new-age touch. One such bar is located in historic downtown Henderson. For more than 45 years, Gold Mine Tavern has been a Henderson mainstay, serving cold beer and cocktails to thousands of regulars, locals and tourists in the Water Street District.

“Come on in. Sit down and enjoy yourself. That’s what we want people to do,” said Tim Haughinberry, owner of the Gold Mine Tavern, who with business partner Brandon Keith, bought the Water Street bar in 2006. They’ve created the perfect environment with a variety of improvements, nightly drink specials, live music, gaming machines, pool tables and even hookahs, the Middle Eastern tobacco water pipes.
While Gold Mine Tavern has been very popular with the motorcycle set and three generations of area residents – including five couples who had their weddings at the bar, most of whom met there – it has had a resurgence and introduction to a whole new clientele under the new management team. More than 100 20- and 30-year-olds are showing up Thursday through Saturday nights to enjoy various classic rock and original start-up bands.
The Gold Mine Tavern’s signature feature is an 80-foot wood bar. “You don’t find bars like this anymore,” Haughinberry said, adding his customers really like it. “The long bar reminds them of favorite haunts they used to frequent in their hometown.”
The bar also boasts old pictures on the walls showcasing the history of the establishment, complimented by updated accessories and recent renovations, including new pool tables, an updated juke box, and new paint and air conditioners. Haughinberry opened up the bar by removing the boards that covered the windows and created a more accessible entrance. The next phase, scheduled for fall 2010, includes a new enclosed outdoor courtyard and patio on the south side of the property and a new stage toward the back of the bar.
“When we bought Gold Mine Tavern, we knew we had something special,” Haughinberry said, noting there aren’t any independent nearby bars outside the neighboring casinos. “And we’re excited to be part of all the activities that are revitalizing the Water Street area.”
Gold Mine Tavern is open daily from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. For more information, or for a list of daily specials and live entertainment, visit www.goldminetavern.com or call (702) 478-8289.
